The National Sexual Health Strategy 2026-2030, which sets out a clear vision to strengthen services, prevention and rights related to sexual and reproductive health in Malta and Gozo, has been launched by the Government.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela stated that this strategy is based on evidence and a human rights-based approach, in line with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr Abela stressed that, despite the progress achieved through the first national strategy, new challenges arise over time that require a coordinated response.

The strategy includes a number of measures that have already begun to be implemented, including the strengthening of genitourinary services (GU Clinic), increased access to testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections, as well as the introduction of free PrEP and the extension of the PEP service.

It was also announced that several modern methods of contraception will be introduced free of charge in the near future, together with a national initiative for the distribution of condoms.

The Minister said that transgender persons will soon be able to be referred for gender affirmation surgery outside Malta through public health services.

The Minister noted that during the public consultation process the Government received contributions from government entities, civil society organisations and members of the public. These contributions helped to create a more inclusive strategy focused on the real needs of all people living in or visiting Malta.

“I call for continued collaboration between all parties so that Malta continues to strengthen sexual health as an important pillar of public health and societal well-being. In this way, we ensure that the health of Gozitans and Maltese continues to be safeguarded,” concluded Dr Abela.
