A celebration event marking the completion of the GLOBE Water Wise Project was held at the Villa Rundle Gardens on Saturday, bringing together students, educators and stakeholders from across Gozo.

The project, coordinated by GLOBE Malta in collaboration with EUROPE DIRECT Gozo, involved nine primary, secondary and post-secondary schools and focused on water sustainability through hands-on STEAM learning and outdoor scientific investigation.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the STEAM and Sustainability Award to all participating schools. The award takes the form of a specially designed trophy, shaped in the outline of Gozo and featuring the GLOBE Programme and EUROPE DIRECT Gozo logos.9 Gozitan schools honoured at GLOBE Water Wise celebration in Villa RundleThe trophy also includes project badges, each representing a completed GLOBE theme. Schools will continue to add new badges in future years, symbolising continuity, growth and long?term commitment to sustainability and STEAM education.

The trophy was designed by Ramona Mercieca, Deputy Coordinator of GLOBE Malta, and funded by EUROPE DIRECT Gozo. This year’s event also marked the fourth consecutive year of collaboration between GLOBE Malta and EUROPE DIRECT Gozo.

Following student presentations showcasing their work during the project, certificates and awards were presented by Ms Maria Elena Despott, Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta.

Ramona Mercieca coordinates GLOBE Malta campaigns which promote STEAM education through practical, outdoor learning experiences. She provides training for teachers and students and supports schools throughout the entire scholastic year.

Over the past years, participating schools have explored themes such as air quality, soil, pollinator gardens and biodiversity, with this year’s focus being water conservation and monitoring.

The STEAM and Sustainability Award recognises the commitment and hard work of both students and educators, highlighting the important role schools play in environmental education and citizen science.

During the event, thanks were also expressed to Mr Jesmond Buttigieg, Manager of EUROPE DIRECT Gozo, and Mr Daniel Borg, CEO of the Gozo Business Chamber, for their ongoing support of GLOBE Malta and its educational initiatives in Gozo.

After the award ceremony, attendees were invited to visit the GLOBE stall, where Ms Mercieca explained the aims of the GLOBE Programme as a global citizen science initiative. Posters and photographs on display showcased the environmental work and investigations being carried out in Gozitan schools.
