New regulations in relation to fireworks have been published this afternoon. The rules have been issued in an effort to minimize the inconvenience caused by the letting off of noisy fireworks across Malta and Gozo.

New regulations will stipulate that the the size of the loud petards be reduced from 15 to 12 centimetres, as well as a limit on the number of petards fired at one session to just six, the only exception being the three minutes of the actual salute.

The regulations also stipulate that smaller, less dangerous fireworks will be able to be let off at a minimum of 100 metres from an inhabited area or street, which is a reduction of the current 150 metres limit.

Other rules include that wherever fireworks are sold, they must be accompanied by a material safety data sheet.

The ministry thanked the Maltese Pyrotechnic Association for its collaboration in this matter.
