Around 42,000 passengers are expected to travel through Malta International Airport on the 13th and 20th of August, with these days expected to be the busiest of the year. Across August, passenger volumes are expected to peak during the first half of the day.

The Airport said that with increased passenger traffic expected across the terminal, Malta International Airport is encouraging passengers to stay informed ahead of their trip and make use of the facilities and services available throughout their journey.

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport given that volcanic ash carried over the Maltese Islands from Mount Etna may continue to cause some disruptions, it said.

Whether travelling for a summer holiday or returning home, The Airport said that passengers can also take a few simple steps to help make their airport experience as smooth as possible:

Passengers are reminded that arriving two hours before their scheduled departure time is more than sufficient to complete the necessary airport processes and reach their gate in time for their flight.

It is also important to be aware of the latest requirements for items carried in hand luggage. At Malta International Airport, liquids in containers of up to two litres as well as electronic devices can remain inside hand luggage during security screening.

Passengers travelling with power banks are reminded that those rated up to 100 Wh are generally permitted in cabin baggage. Power banks rated above 100 Wh are not permitted in passenger baggage. A passenger cannot carry more than two power banks in their hand luggage.

The area has recently been expanded, with 10 pre-security gates now available and further improvements planned for the coming weeks.

For those looking for refreshments or last-minute essentials before heading up to Departures, Fuwamai has recently opened in the Food Court, joining Burger King, KFC, Dr Juice, Falafel Street, Saigon and Paul Le Cafe. The airport pharmacy has also extended its opening hours and is now open daily from 07:00 to 00:00, including on Sundays and public holidays.

Once through security, MIA said that passengers are welcomed into the DUFRY retail area, where a selection of new brands, including Charlotte Tilbury, Creed and Victoria’s Secret, have recently been introduced.

Passengers are encouraged to regularly check the flight information screens for the latest flight updates and gate information, and to allow sufficient time to make their way to the gate once it is announced. In the case of passengers travelling to non-Schengen destinations, it is advised that border control is cleared as soon as the gate becomes available, the Airport said.

Before heading to their gate, passengers can refill their water bottles for free from airport water fountains near Gate 10 and Gate 17.

A number of services are also available to help families travelling during the summer peak.

A dedicated Parental Room is available on Level 0 to parents who require privacy during their time at the airport. Parents can request access from a customer services representative at our Information Desk. From here, any passengers travelling with children can also collect free activity books to keep their little ones occupied.

Families travelling with children can also make use of the airport’s dedicated family security lane, which is designed to facilitate the security screening process for families. Greeters are also present throughout the terminal to assist, as necessary.
