Civil Protection Department firefighters deployed in Portugal are currently assisting the Forca Especial de Protecao Civil in combating a major wildfire in Arouca.
The operation is mobilising approximately 600 firefighters, who are working together to contain the flames and protect affected communities and surrounding areas.
The Maltese contingent is stationed in Portugal as part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s wildfire pre-positioning programme, coordinated through the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).
The CPD said that its firefighters ”continue to carry out their duties with dedication and professionalism, demonstrating Malta’s commitment to European cooperation and solidarity during emergencies.”
