The Association of Private Family Doctors (APFD) has welcomed the decision, following discussions with the Health Minister to grant private family doctors access to a wider range of diagnostic investigations, including a range of ultrasound examinations previously unavailable to them.
Up to this date, private family doctors only had access to basic blood tests and X rays as part of their investigations repertoire, the Association said.
It added that this important development will improve access to investigations for patients in the community, allowing private family doctors to investigate, diagnose and follow up patients more effectively and in a timely manner.
It will also facilitate the continued follow-up of patients discharged from or previously assessed at Mater Dei Hospital, enabling appropriate care to be provided closer to patients’ homes.
The Association noted that by expanding the diagnostic tools available to family doctors, the measure should also help reduce unnecessary referrals to Emergency and secondary care services, easing pressure on hospital while ensuring patients receive appropriate care at the right level.
The APFD thanked Minister Dr Ian Borg ”for his constructive approach and looks forward to continued collaboration in the interests of patients and Malta’s healthcare system.”
