A magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded off the eastern coast of Gozo at around 3:53am local time (01:53:37 UTC) on Wednesday, the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group said.

The event was first recorded by the Qala seismic station, followed by the seismic station in Comino. The signal was subsequently recorded across the entire Malta Seismic Network and was also recorded by seismic stations south of Sicily, the Group said.

It noted that a magnitude 2.4 earthquake is considered a small earthquake, but earthquakes of this size can still be felt locally, particularly when they occur relatively close to the surface and to populated areas.

The Malta Seismic Network continues to monitor seismic activity around the Maltese Islands and the wider central Mediterranean region.
