The Malta Ranger Unit said that four hours after the Turtle Dove season was closed on Monday, one of its Rangers on Gozo heard a poacher using what seemed to be an ”illegal shotgun, which fired five consecutive shots instead of three”

The Ranger saw the poacher shooting a Turtle Dove and hiding it, the MRU said.

The Malta Ranger Unit reported that ”this was approximately four hours after the quota for Turtle Dove had been reached and all hunters were informed by the Wild Birds Regulation Unit.

The Police was alerted ”and with the evidence documented, the Gozo Police managed to immediately identify the suspect, he will now face Court charges, the MRU said.

The Malta Ranger Unit expressed its thanks to the Gozo Police for their quick assistance.

”We also wish to remind Minister Dalli and Minister Camilleri, that Gozo still doesn’t have an EPU Police unit. Such unit would deter illegalities like this one and increase the chance of getting caught,” the MRU said.
