The Malta Development Association (MDA) has announced its new Council and Executive Committee for the 2026-2028 term, following its Annual General Meeting, during which it called for better planning and higher industry standards.
The Executive Committee comprises Michael Stivala as President, Denise Xuereb as Vice-President, Pierre Galea as Secretary General and Alfred Camilleri as Treasurer. The Council also includes Malcolm Mallia, Euchar Vella, Dana Farrugia, Rhys Buttigieg, Matthew Zammit, Erskine Vella and Darren Ciantar.
Addressing the AGM, MDA President Michael Stivala described the coming two years as a challenging but positive period for the industry, particularly with the introduction of building codes, reforms to planning regulations and the need for stronger forward planning.
“Our industry plays a vital role in Malta’s economy, generating investment, employment and opportunities. However, economic growth must translate into better living standards and an improved quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan residents.
“The introduction of building codes and planning reforms presents an opportunity to modernise the industry, raise professional standards and ensure a fair and level playing field for all operators.
“Malta urgently needs better forward planning, particularly in infrastructure, transport, utilities and community facilities. We must anticipate future needs rather than continuously react to problems.
“Equally important is improving construction-site practices and showing greater sensitivity towards neighbouring residents through better communication, responsible site management and stricter safety standards.
“The MDA will continue working constructively with both the Government and the Opposition, regulatory authorities and other stakeholders to promote meaningful reforms, reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and ensure that development contributes positively to society. “Development and quality of life must go hand in hand. Our objective should be a modern, responsible and sustainable industry that benefits the entire country,” Mr Stivala stated.
Mr Stivala thanked all outgoing and continuing Council members, section representatives and the entire MDA membership for their dedication, trust and contribution to the Association, emphasising that unity remains essential to achieving its objectives.
The MDA represents 12 industry sections: Property Developers, Building Contractors, Builders / Bennejja, Demolition and Excavation Contractors, Quarry Owners, Road Contractors, Estate Agents, Landlords, Condominium Services, Renewable Energy, Technical Sections and Traders.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to representing businesses of all sizes, promoting professional standards and working with all stakeholders towards better planning, responsible development and an improved quality of life for present and future generations.
