As a first reaction to Budget 2027, Zminijietna – Voice of the Left warned that measures increasing the cost of living and working for third-country nationals (TCNs) risk driving workers away from Malta and worsening labour shortages across several sectors.
Zminijietna stated that “trade unions will need to negotiate better wages and improved working conditions to ensure that workers can meet rising expenses and maintain a decent standard of living. Employers must also recognise that retaining workers requires fair pay, dignity and security.”
The Voice of the Left went on to say that, “TCNs make an important contribution to Malta’s economy and essential services. Any policy that increases their expenses without adequate compensation risks affecting both workers and the sectors that depend on them.”
Zminijietna concluded by calling for stronger collective bargaining, fair wage increases and policies that protect all workers, regardless of nationality.
