Updated: In the past weeks, the Government have met with the European Commission to submit its proposals on opening limited hunting season in spring. The Government has based its proposals on two considerations:
(1) To determine the amount of turtle dove and quail which may be taken in order to ensure the sustainability of the species; and
(2) The period within which to allow hunting in spring.
The Government’s calculations indicate that the seizure of 13,000 quail and 12,000 turtle dove is in the parameters of “limited number” under the Birds Directive. However, it was not possible to reach agreement with the Commission on this proposal and therefore the discussions will continue in the coming months. Consequently, the Government decided in 2010 that the spring season will be very limited.
The hunting season for spring 2010 will open from Saturday the 24th of April to Friday the 30th of April, both dates are inclusive, with a game (national bag) of 3600 turtle dove and 3900 quail. This will be done through the issuance of a special license for the 2500 hunters who wish to apply for spring hunting. Once the bag limit has been reached the season will close.
Any hunters found in breach of the law will lose their special licence as well as their general hunting licence and will have charges brought against them. Their will be hunting marshalls to assist the ALE police with their patrols and law enforcement, these marshalls will be recruited on a voluntary basis.
Hunters will have to apply for a special licence which will cost €25, the funds collected from this will then be used for law enforcement. These applications can be applied for at the post office between Monday the 11th and Thursday the 15th of April.
Those hunters holding a licence will only be allowed a quota of two birds per day, with a maximum of three birds per licence. They will be required to wear an armband showing identification on it. Every bird that they shoot will have to be reported by SMS.
Hunting will be permitted from Monday to Saturday between two hours before sunrise until noon. No game can be taken on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Make sure you all remember all the promises that were made before the last general election, that we were to keep on hunting and trapping.
