Eleven local councils in Gozo will be helped by the Parliamentary Secretariat responsible for Local Councils to buy more books for libraries in their localities. This was announced by Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Said, during an event called “The Book A step away from you,” in the local library at Nadur, Gozo.
The responsibility of libraries, which were previously managed by the Department of Libraries, now comes under the responsibility of local councils. Chris Said advised that Gozo now has 11 local libraries and the local councils have done their best to make libraries more accessible to encourage visitors to make more use of their resources.
Chris Said explained that all libraries in Gozo have been given more space inside as well as being renovated. Moreover, where there was no library as in the case of the location of Ghasri, the local council has been able to set up a small one at the request of the residents.
The Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Local Councils said that local libraries in Gozo were only open 4 hours per week, whereas now they are opening an average of 8 hours per week. With Qala Local Council opening theirs for 10 hours per week. Chris Said said that in the year 2009 the budget for local libraries in Malta and Gozo was doubled with all the local councils and have invested more than Euro 188,000 books for their libraries.
Also present was Frederick Azzopardi, Parliamentary Assistant on behalf of the Ministry for Gozo.
