Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party conducted a courtesy visit to Animal Welfare Department in Marsa. Simon Galea Spokesperson on Agriculture and Animal Welfare said, “Enforcement improved sharply throughout these couple of years. This is attributed to investment and the recruiting of a number of dedicated inspectors.On the legal notice to be issued where dogs from breeds normally involved in dog fighting will have to be micro chipped, Simon Galea remarked.” He concluded by saying, “AD was always in favour of introducing a micro chipping programme for all dogs. While this a positive step forward, the introduction of such should be spread to all breeds of dogs in order to control not only the cruel practice of dog fighting but also to trace irresponsible owners of abandoned dogs. Finally all funds originating from related fines should be allocated directly towards the cure and tending of animals involved.”

Chairperson Michael Briguglio added, ” Enforcement plays a major role in combating animal cruelty. On the other hand education can prove more effective on long term. AD believes that people more kind to animals form a better nation.”

“Alternattiva Demokratika has always been on the forefront in policies on animal welfare, whether it has to do with cruelty towards animals, abusive use of animals in circuses, exploitation of animals in the food industry and many other examples,” added Michael Briguglio.
