As part of the public consultation, the Cana Movement has this morning published a critical analysis on on the Bill for the Protection of Human Embryos.

This paper was written on behalf of the Council by Cana Council member Dr Robert Tufigno LLD.

The Movement said that “the Memo does not intend to enter into the ethical and moral issues of the Bill. These have in principle already been dealt with in the Pastoral Letter of the Bishops of Malta and Gozo entitled Celebrating Human Life . The teaching of the Catholic Church on this matter may also be found in the Encyclical Letters Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae and in the instructions of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Donum Vitae and Dignitas Personae.

“In the Memo the legal and cultural implications of the Bill will be highlighted.

“This Memo does not enter into the technical (such as biological and medical) implications of the Bill. Nor is it intended to be a comprehensive analysis of the Bill. It is an attempt to shed light on the Bill’s implications.

“The exercise certainly merits further reflection and studying both from a legal perspective as well as from the medical, technical and ethical aspects.”
