An exhibition of more than one hundred and fifty paintings, drawings and engravings by various artists from three generations of the Busuttil family, entitled ‘The Busuttil Artists – A legacy of three generations,’ are on display in the Exhibition Hall of the Ministry for Gozo and the Banca Giuratale, Victoria, Gozo.
The exhibition is organised by the Ministry for Gozo together with Heritage Malta and the Sacred Art Commission of the Diocese of Gozo. It includes many works of art from several palaces and government ministries, the National Museum of the Arts, several churches in Malta and Gozo and a number of private collections.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi, in the presence of the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. Mr Sandro Debono, Senior Curator in charge of the National Museum of Arts gave a speech on the works exhibited in the exhibition and the artists.
For about a 150 years the Busuttil family lived just a few steps away from where the exhibition is being held, their works adorned many churches, palaces and private homes. This exhibition gives a clearer picture of the artistic skills of several members of this family. Many of the works are being exhibited for the first time and this exhibition will surely help their stature as artists to be revalued and widely appreciated.
This exhibition is coinciding with the activities that the Ministry for Gozo is preparing for the start of the weekend of Notte Gozitana, which this year will take place on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of May. Each year the Ministry for Gozo, at the start of Notte Gozitana, organises an exhibition in the particular aspect of culture, to increase the appreciation towards art and culture of the island.
The exhibition opens daily and will last open until the 31st of May. The opening times are between 8.30am and 4.00pm from Monday to Friday and from 9.00am to noon on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is free.
A bood was published for this exhibition that includes several articles that shed a new light on the artists in the Busuttil family and also includes the exhibition catalogue.
