Around sixty olive and pomegranate trees have been reported stolen from the new picnic area next to Gnien il-Familja in Qala between Thursday and Friday. These trees were planted on the 2nd of March, barely 2 1/2months ago, in the presence of George Pullicino.
While committing to re-plant the stolen trees, Qala Local Council committed itself to plant a further 200 trees on the 7th June (Qala Day), Whilst deploring this act of vandalism, Mayor Paul Buttigieg described how these trees had a name tag of the person who planted it, the majority of which were children. Some of them went every week to water "their" trees. He concluded by saying that this act was aimed directly at the Qala children.
Qala Local Council and the Police Department are pleading anyone who has information which could lead to the culprits of this shameful act to come forward and share their knowledge with the authorities.

This is so disgraceful and disgusting, someone must have seen something! In Gozo it is almost impossible to fart without someone hearing you!
Come on, anyone who saw something strange going on please phone the mayor or police. If these vandals/thieves do not get caught, it could be your front garden disappearing next!
What chance to children have of learning about the environment, when adults do something like this?

Once again, moronic behaviour occurs to defeat those who are building an eco-island. Prevention is always better than a cure, however. There is only one approach road to the site and a gate at the main road, locked after sunset would help. I also suggest the replacements have a label on them, stating ‘THIS TREE IS EQUIPPED WITH A TRACING BEACON’.
Is public flogging legal here?
This is indeed a very low act. It is hard to forgive these people. Please bring them back and apologise. Gozo does not need this behaviour. Shame on them. SHAME!
