The work of cleaning Wied ta’ Zejta, within the limits of Victoria, got underway a few weeks ago and up to now about one thousand tons of material has been collected.

This was announced by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, at a press conference in the valley, which launched the project of drainage water cleaning in Gozo, being done in light of government’s vision of Gozo as an ecological island. Present for this conference was also the Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry for Gozo, Frederick Azzopardi.

This extensive project, which is part of the work of government to make Gozo an ecological island, was the start of collaboration between the Ministry for Gozo and the Malta Environment and Planning.

The Minister for Gozo, announced that during this year cleaning will be carried out on four dams of water – Wied ta’ Zejta and another two in the valley situated between Victoria and Marsalforn. She said that this is only the beginning, because there are many plans underway to clean the water in the valleys, which have already been identified that have accumulated over many years, but will not be completed immediately, however, with commitment and strategy it will be achieved. “This project will not only improve the overall appearance of the countryside in Gozo and rid material that has been put there over the years, but will also serve to create facilities for the storage of rainwater, in the winter months. This should be beneficial to the agricultural sector, ” said Minister Debono.

The project cleaning of drainage water in the valleys of Gozo is one of 25 proposed among 80 listed in the plan of action on the eco-Gozo vision for the period 2010-2012, which the Ministry for Gozo is working on.

Given its nature, the work of cleaning of drainage water, can be done in the dry months of the year and therefore during the summer months various initiatives will be underway in this respect.
