The stories covered in this weeks issue are:
1. Noel Debono of Nadur, son of Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, and Maximilian Grech of Victoria were recently ordained priests by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech at the Gozo Cathedral, Victoria. They are expected to continue with their studies and pastoral work in Italy.
2. Gozo Sacred Heart Seminary Form 5 students recently celebrated their leaving school. After Mass, celebrated by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech and head of school Fr Noel Saliba, students Thomas Bajada and Joshua Caruana delivered a speech on behalf of their fellow classmates.
3. A painting of St John the Evangelist by Paul Camilleri Cauchi was recently unveiled at the Rotunda church of St John the Baptist in Xewkija. The painting is one of a set of four to be placed above the side doors flanking the church’s main altar.
4. The Mnarja Philharmonic Society recently gave a concert entitled ‘Big Band Adventures’ at Martin Camilleri Square, Nadur. The band, directed by Mro. Joseph Grech, opened the concert with four classical pieces – Italiensiche Operngala, Tchaikovsky’s ‘greatest hits’, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart ‘pop symphony’.
Percussionist Michael Camilleri played Concerto for Drum Set and Band, including three movements – 1960s rock ‘n’ roll, jazz waltz and swing – followed by Amboss Polka (a traditional German polka arranged by John Borg), featuring two soloists on anvils accompanied by the band.
Pop singer Christine Camilleri interpreted You Raise Me Up and Gloria, accompanied by the band. The last part of the programme consisted of John Williams in concert and ‘super hits of the 1990s’, followed by selections from Mary Poppins.
During the concert Mgr Salvu Muscat and Charles Xuereb were awarded the title of honorary president of the society.
