On Monday evening, The Gozo Youth Orchestra within the Gozo Youth Wind Band & Orchestra, in collaboration with the American Embassy and the Culture Office (Ministry for Gozo) presented an open-air spectacular concert, ‘Opera vs Pop Under the Stars – 3rd Edition,’ with the participation of guest Soprano Pamela Agius (New York) and Bass Noel Galea (Gozo, Malta). The concert took place in the Gozo Ministry’s Courtyard, Victoria.
Pop singer Ludwig Galea joined forces with the two soloists and presented a spectacular repertoire of both classic and pop.
The Orchestra, which consisted mainly of 50 Gozitan Youths, was under the direction of Founder and Music Director Mro Joseph Grech. In the first part of the programme a selection of operatic arias from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Verdi’s Nabucco, Un Ballo in Maschera and Simon Boccanegra, Offenbach’s Les Contes D’Hoffmann, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana as well as the well-known songs Granada and Il Bacioa were performed, followed in the second part by an array of lighter pop arrangements from soundtracks and musicals including West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Martin Guerre, Les Miserables, Aspects of Love, and Sound of Music amongst other.
The ‘Opera vs Pop Under the Stars’ annual concert has now become a popular part of the Gozo cultural calendar.
