The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, along with Parliamentary Assistant, Frederick Azzopardi and other ministry officials paid a site visit to the works being carried out in the valley that runs from Victoria to Marsalforn bay. The Minister said, “One of the objectives of the Ministry for Gozo as regards the implementation of Government’s vision of making Gozo a green island, is a programme of cleaning and maintenance of the water catchment areas in the valleys to maximize the storage of rainwater and its use on the island of Gozo. It is hoped that the work that has been done in the Marsalforn valley will result in much better rainwater storage. “
The Minister went on to say that work on the valley began last August after extensive consultation with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) on the correct areas for the work to be carried out, as well as the procedures to be followed in order to have the least possible impact on the natural environment of the area. Soil that is collected during this clean up will be used in afforestation projects that are being managed by the Ministry for Gozo, while the stones that are collected will be used in the project for building walls where they are needed. Work has also recently been carried out in Wied ta’ Zejta, near Victoria.
This programme, wich is run by the Ministry for Gozo and will be spread over three years, will not only improve the overall appearance of the countryside in Gozo and rid material that has been put there over the years, but will also serve to create facilities for the storage of rainwater, in the winter months, which will enable more rainwater to be collected and used, rather than being wasted by flowing away into the sea. This should be beneficial to the agricultural section, as it will mean less ground water having to be extracted, which will have a positive effect on the water table, the Minister said.
The project cleaning of drainage water in the valleys of Gozo is one of 25 proposed among 80 listed in the plan of action on the eco-Gozo vision for the period 2010-2012, which the Ministry for Gozo is working on.
.

It seems to me that it is about time that the Ministry of Gozo, do something.
This to clean the valley from Victoria to Marsalforn should have taken place a long time ago.
Oh yes, are they still going to do some work at the gardens in Victoria?.
I still picture the nice picture that I saw, how this garden is going to be. But from the other hand………. nothing is going to be done over there. Maybe two or three more years have to pass.
It is ashamed for the people of Gozo and the Maltese, and most of all the visitors that come to Gozo.
