Xaghra’s Victory Band commemorates it’s 112th anniversary

The Victory Band of Xaghra is commemorating it’s 112th anniversary. The band was officially founded on 25th October 1898 and they said that it was the first band to be established in any Gozitan villages.

This band was founded through the initiative of the then Xaghra Archpriest, Rev. Guzepp Diacono, under the musical director of Mro. Eduardo Farina. During its history, the Victory Band under went a series of different musical successes with the most prestigious one being its visit to Canada in September 1994. The band was the first one in Gozo to perform in this country for the entertainment of the Maltese emigrants living there.

The short programme of activities to commemorate this anniversary will include the two following religious ceremonies:

Monday 25th October 2010:

6.00pm: Thanksgiving Mass at the Xaghra Collegiate Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady. The Nativitas Choir of the same society animates this Liturgy.

Wednesday 3rd November 2010:

Commemoration of the departed music directors, bandsmen, members and benefactors of the Society.

6.00pm: Celebration of Mass at the Xaghra Collegiate Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady by Rev. Canon Julian Refalo Rapa, Spiritual Director of this Philharmonic Society. The Nativitas Choir animates mass. Soon afterwards, there will be a pilgrimage of prayers to the Xaghra Parish Cemetery where flowers will be placed on the tombs of the bandsmen who are laying to rest in this sacred place.
