Enemalta has announced further fuel price increases which will come into effect tomorrow, Wednesday, December the 1st, 2010.

The Corporation said that the new price increases reflect the prices from their latest shipments of imported fuel and that the Petrol Platts prices increased by 1.2% from October to November. Also, the EUR/USD exchange rate weakened throughout November, leading to further adjustments, Enemalts said.

The FORUM group of trade unions condemned the increases, pointing out that these fuel price increases would absorb the cost of living increase announced in the budget.

The Group said that with petrol prices rising by 5c per litre and diesel by 3c per litre, a worker who filled a 45-litre tank would need to spend €2.25c more each time.

The fuel price increase would further erode the people’s purchasing power as well as industrial competitiveness and parents would also have to pay more for school transport.

In a remark sarcastically aimed at the recent ministerial pay rise, the Group added that those who had been given a €600 increase in their salary would not feel the pinch.
