AD supports the walk against the use of animals in circusesAlternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party and its youth wing Alternattiva Demokratika Zghazagh announced their support of the symbolic walk in protest to be held next Wednesday, the 8th of December, at 5pm, on the use of animals in circuses.

Simon Galea, AD spokesperson for animal welfare and agriculture, said, “The Green Party reaffirms its position in favour of a ban on use of wild and exotic animals in circuses. While stressing the need for competent authorities to monitor the welfare of animals currently being used in circuses, AD strongly believes that the circus environment does not cater for the natural needs of most of these creatures. An elephant or a lion is not meant to spend its life travelling around in containers confined in small spaces. Definitely this environment is far from anything near its natural environment of the savannah.’ ‘ Michael Briguglio, AD chairperson, added: ‘AD supports the NGOs and individuals which are active for animal rights. As a Green Party, AD gives top priority on animal welfare, as can be clearly seen in our electoral manifestos. We are also the only party with a spokesperson on animal welfare.”

The Martin Circus, the circus coming in Malta next Christmas, is a small italian circus touring mainly the south of Italy with few animals. This is a circus with a poor record in keeping the animals, yet, once abroad, boasts a formidable zoo. Keep an eye on the welfare of those animals.

In regard of the bears, the owner, a woman with a dubious past in animal welfare. Once quite popular in Austrian circuses, when the Country banned circuses with exotic animals, she moved to Italy and worked at circo di Vienna and more then once the bears were set on against the animal right campainers protesting outside the circus. The adverse publicity forced the owner to move from Italy and work in France and Spain. The habit has not changed, so keep an eye on circus Martin

When is the protest at the Italian ‘Martin Circus’ over Christmas? Many people want to know, so that they may participate peacefully , to show support for the banning of such cruel practices. We’ll done the Malta government and all those who worked so hard to bring the ban about!
