In October, total arrivals in collective accommodation stood at 122,174, up by 13.1 per cent over 2009. Similarly, total guest nights increased by 10.2 per cent, while the average length of stay was calculated at 5.9 nights.

National Overview – Non-resident arrivals stood at 109,581, while total nights spent were estimated at 689,296. Notable increases were recorded in hotel accommodation, while arrivals and nights in other collective accommodation both registered decreases. The average length of stay for non-residents stood at 6.3 nights, down by 0.2 of a night when compared to October 2009. On the other hand, resident arrivals and nights spent in collective accommodation increased by 4.2 and 5.1 per cent respectively. The average length of stay for residents remained unchanged from last year and stood at 2.2 nights.

During the month under review, the overall net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments stood at 59.8 per cent, a rise of 4.5 percentage points over 2009. Significant increases in occupancy rates were noted in all hotel categories. The non-resident occupancy rate stood at 57.5 per cent, an increase of 4.4 percentage points in respect of last year’s levels. Furthermore the overall resident occupancy rate increased marginally and stood at 2.3 per cent.

Regional Overview – In October, both total arrivals and nights in Malta increased when compared to last year and were estimated at 114,997 and 688,709 respectively. The occupancy rate in Malta was calculated at 60 per cent, while the highest levels of occupancy were recorded in 4 star hotel accommodation, which was estimated at 74.7 per cent. Increases in total arrivals and nights were also noted in Gozo and Comino, while the average length of stay edged down by 0.2 of a night.

Capacity – On a national level, the overall net supply of bed-places stood at 38,696. Decreases in bed- places for Gozo and Comino were contrasted by increases in Malta. The effect of declines in Gozo and Comino were offset by the increases registered in Malta. The net number of bedrooms for October went up by 231 and was calculated at 17,922.
