The Department said it encourages everyone, particularly vulnerable persons (elderly and chronically ill), to take the combined seasonal flu vaccine.

The usual precautions should also be carried out, including avoiding crowds of people and unnecessary contact with people who are sick with the flu, as well as regularly washing your hands. Persons who suspect that they have the flu should contact their doctor and stay inside. The Department of Health also said that each year many deaths from seasonal influenza are reported in Malta.

This year, an elderly British tourist who was on holiday in Malta, died from the H1N1 virus after complications developed. Another person is receiving care and is in a stable condition.
