Last Thursday, the Committee of the Regions unanimously approved a report prepared by the Mayor of San Lawrenz, Noel Formosa, regarding the Integral Maritime Policy.

The role of the Committee of the Regions within the European Union is to give its views of the Regions and Local Councils of the member states on policies being discussed in the European Parliament and Commission. Both the Parliament and the Commission are obliged to observe the reports prepared by the Committee of the Regions. The report on the Integral Maritime Policy was entrusted to San Lawrenz, Mayor Noel Formosa.

This report emphasised, among other things, on the need of sufficient funds for more development of this policy until this financial period comes to an end in 2013. Emphasis was also made on the sustainable economic growth, work and innovation and this needs special attention in the limelight of one of the worst economic crises that Europe is going through at the moment. Economic growth, work and innovation can greatly contribute to achieve the aims of the Europe 2020 Programmee.

Many members who spoke about the content of the report showed their satisfaction during the discussion prior to passing it for the vote. There were16 amendments with the aim of improving the contents.

The report also attracted the attention of various countries as well of the local and international media.
