Professor Joe Friggieri will be giving a talk at the Circolo Gozitano premises in Victoria. The Professor will examine some of the major theories that have been offered as possible answers to the question raised in the title of his talk.

Given the different kinds of objects and activities that have claimed artistic status across the centuries, is it possible to give a list of necessary and sufficient conditions that would need to be satisfied in order for something to deserve to be called artistic?

The attempt to answer this difficult question will be illustrated by means of examples taken from the various genres of artistic expression – literature, music, painting, sculpture, drama, photography, film and architecture. The talk will be followed by a discussion.

Professor Joe Friggieri is head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Malta and Chairman of the Edward de Bono Institute for the Design and Development of Thinking.

The talk will be delivered in English and will take place on Wednesday, the 9th of February 2011, starting at 7.30 pm, at Circolo Gozitano, 6 Sir Adrian Dingli Street in Victoria The general public is invited to attend.

This talk forms part of the ongoing programme of activities being organised the Circolo Gozitano.
