The Gozo Business Chamber said it welcomes the news of the proposal for a tunnel between Malta and Gozo, something which the Chamber has been discussing for a long time.
The GBC said that such a fixed link between the two islands will mean that students and young workers who have to cross over daily to Malta will find it easier to return home everyday, something which will help increase commerce by their shopping and living in Gozo. It will also make life easier for people needing to travel continuously for hospital treatment in Malta. “Besides, it will encourage foreign and domestic investment as it will provide a direct link with Malta International Airport and the Freeport,” the chamber said.
The Chamber said it believes that, due to work and travel constraints, Gozo is suffering a brain drain and the population is slowly shrinking as parents now go to Malta to visit their children on weekends rather than vice-versa.
“The double insularity of Gozo means extra expenses for businesses, lack of foreign direct investment and lack of fair competition,” the GBC said.
“A permanent link will solve most of the problems caused by double insularity and result in benefits across the board for all types of industry,” the GBC concluded.

Why elderly Brits????? there are Germans Austrians, Indians and even Maltese and Gozitanos reitred here, amongst other nationalities
@charles mintoff, i am one of the retired brits living in gozo, what exactly is your point ? i pay my maltese taxes just like you, as i live here i pay into the local community for food,goods & services,
i and the hundreds of other perminant residents and the many thousands of visitors come to gozo for what it is, or should i say, was !
it is the people with the ” brains ” in malta as you call them who are ruining gozo by building the apartment blocks that are unfinished, either as investments,( when their are already thousands of empty buildings,yes i know, some gozitalns are just as guilty) or for their own occasional use, that is ruining gozo, it looks like downtown beirut in places,
cant the government seriously come up with the cash for such a project ?
and if it could,do you think a bridge or tunnel would be provided free of charge to the users ?
gozo relies on its visitors, holiday makers & tourists and part of the experiance is the excellant ferry service that we have, it is the fact that gozo is a seperate island that make it appealing
