Heritage Malta has announced that a lecture, by the international Ribera scholar Professor Craig Felton, will be delivered on this coming Monday, the 21st of March, at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta. The lecture, ‘Jusepe de Ribera: Spanish Painter in Baroque Italy’, will focus on Spanish artist Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652).

There are currently two works by Jusepe Ribera on permanent display at the National Museum of Fine Arts. Heritage Malta took the opportunity to invite Professor Craig Felton to deliver a lecture when it became known that he intended to make a stopover in Malta in order to examine the Ribera paintings.

Craig Felton is a Professor of Art History at Smith College, Massachusetts, where he lectured since January 1984. He teaches courses in the Italian Renaissance period and the Italian and Spanish Baroque period. He also teaches Western Art, from cave paintings to the present time, but his specialized research is in Italian-Spanish 17th century art. In fact, he has published extensively on seventeenth-century Italian and Spanish painting, with an emphasis on Naples. He is currently investigating the art and patronage of Catholic Europe (circa 1550-1650).

Before joining the faculty at Smith College, Professor Craig Felton was first involved with the faculty of the Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas and then Assistant Director of the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas.

This event will take place at 6pm at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta.
