January figures see upward rise in domestic tourism to Gozo

In January, total arrivals in collective accommodation establishments were estimated at 60,124, up by 21.1 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year. Total nights spent increased by 9.0 per cent.
During January, non-resident arrivals stood at 51,075, up by 28.3 per cent over last year. Correspondingly, non-resident nights advanced by 30,160 and stood at 327,113. Despite an increase in both arrivals and nights, the average length of stay for non-residents dropped by 1.1 nights to 6.4. Resident arrivals and nights stood at 9,049 and 21,355 respectively. In the month under review, all hotel categories registered increases in their arrivals.
The overall net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments stood at 32.6 per cent – up by 1.1 percentage points when compared to last year. The non-resident occupancy rate increased by 1.3 percentage points to 30.6, while the resident occupancy rate dropped slightly to 2.0 per cent. Decreases in occupancy rates were noted in aparthotels and hostels, whereas all hotel categories registered increases.
Total arrivals in Malta numbered 57,648, whereas total nights amounted to 342,119. The average length of stay was calculated at 5.9 nights – down by 0.7 of a night when compared to 2010. The occupancy rate in Malta was calculated at 33.2 per cent. Total arrivals and nights in Gozo and Comino registered increases and stood at 2,476 and 6,349 respectively, with an occupancy rate of 16.5 per cent. This was mainly brought about by an upward move in domestic tourism (Maltese residents visiting Gozo). The average length of stay in Gozo and Comino stood at 2.6 nights, compared to 2.8 last year.
On a national level, the overall net supply of bed-places was estimated at 34,229, while the number of bedrooms stood at 16,098. Increases in bed-places and bedrooms were recorded in both regions, with an average 2.1 beds per room.
