The Malta Standards Authority said it is carrying out an exercise in order to identify the reason behind leaking LPG cylinder regulators. MSA has already held meetings with all the players in the industry and is meeting frequently to study the issue in an effort to address it as quickly as possible.

Until the causes of such leakages are identified, MSA said it is recommending consumers to ensure that the regulators installed on their cylinders are suitable for use on the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) marketed in Malta. Consumers are to ensure that the regulators fitted onto the cylinders are in good working order and changed according to the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Ideally LPG cylinders are to be kept outdoors and no tools should be used during the fitting of the regulators onto the cylinders. The use of such tools may damage the rubber seal on the cylinder valve.

MSA said it also advises economic operators to ensure that regulators they place on the market conform to the applicable standards and that they have sufficient warnings about the intended use as defined by the respective manufacturer. Moreover, MSA advises consumers to report any leaks to the LPG supplier on the numbers affixed to each cylinder.
