Rise in commuters and vehicles recorded on Gozo Channel

In the first quarter of 2011, sea transport between Malta and Gozo registered increases in both vehicles and commuters when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2010.
In the first quarter of this year, commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 8.4 per cent, totalling 797,089 when compared to the corresponding period of 2010.
During the same period, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 4.2 per cent, totalling 233,935.
The highest number of commuters was recorded in March – 332,287 or 41.7 per cent of the total for the quarter.
The number of trips in the period under review stood at 4,624, a marginal increase of 0.8 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous year.
The majority of trips took place during March – 1,686 – or 36.5 per cent of total trips for this quarter.
