The Office of the Commissioner for Children has worked closely with the MCAST Institute for Art and Design for the past few months. Mr. Stephen Vella, the Director of the Institute presented the Commissioner for Children, Mrs Helen D’Amato, with material on internet safety which was produced by the students who are currently following various courses within the Institute for Art and Design.

The students produced an activity book aimed at 5 to 7 year olds; a comic book aimed at 8 to 11 year olds; an animated cartoon aimed at 11 to 15 year olds and a video clip aimed at teenagers aged between 16 and 18. The students were asked to produce this material as part of their study units.

Mrs D’Amato said that the resources produced by the students are invaluable as they are giving us the opportunity to use locally produced material as seen through the eyes of the young persons themselves. Through these resources children and young people will be able to learn more about using the internet in a way which is safe.

The Commissioner for Children will be sharing this material with other stakeholders. Some of these resources will be used as part of the BeSmartOnline! awareness campaign which is co-funded by the European Union. The Office of the Commissioner for Children is one of the partners of this project together with the Directorate for Educational Services, the Foundation for Social Welfare Services – Appogg, the Malta Police Force, the Directorate for Catholic Schools as well as the Malta Communications Authority which is the lead partner in this campaign.
