Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party (AD) presented its TV spots for the divorce referendum campaign. The Greens are appealing to voters to vote ‘YES’ in the referendum.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said that, “our spots speak about the fact that divorce a civil right that is available in all countries in the world save for Malta and the Philippines. The situation in Malta is actually discriminatory, as the State recognizes divorces obtained in other countries, even by Maltese citizens, yet only a few afford to do this. We are therefore calling for an end to such discrimination. We are also appealing to voters, including those who are happily married, to give a second chance to people who need this basic civil right. In short AD believes that Maltese citizens who live in Malta should have the same right to divorce as is the case with practically all citizens of the world.”
Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, Deputy Chairperson and spokesperson for civil rights said that, “AD urges all those who are in favour of the introduction of divorce as well as those who do not agree with divorce but do not want to prohibit others from this right to vote yes in the referendum. Those who want to deny divorce to the thousands who need this civil right should not be allowed to win. Whatever the result of the referendum, Minister Carmel Mifsud Bonnici announced the government’s proposal for a cohabitation bill. AD agrees with this proposal but the government is unjust by only giving an opportunity to those couples who wish to cohabit a chance to regulate their status and not those couples who wish to remarry too.”
Ralph Cassar, Secretary General, said, “our spots will be aired on TVM as part of the schedule of the Broadcasting Authority and will also be available on the internet. Unlike PN and PL, AD has a clear position in favour of the introduction of divorce and we have an important responsibility to put forward our message so that Malta can finally introduce this basic civil right.”
