It was exactly a year ago when Gozo SPCA personnel, out walking their own dogs, found a starving, dehydrated Tal Cacca puppy, far from habitation on the Sanap Cliffs near Munxar, Gozo. This little scrap of a puppy looked much younger than she really was, a lack of nourishment had severely stunted her growth, however, she must have reckoned that she was on to a good thing and so, determined not to be left behind, attached herself like a limpet to the dogs, which were all ex Gozo SPCA strays.

The rehabilitation of Cammy, as she became known, started right there and then. It was the time of the British General Election and Cameron wasn’t quite the right name for a girl.

In spite of being starved and riddled with ticks, fleas and worms, Cammy had a really sunny nature and soon won the hearts of the Gozo SPCA volunteers. She was certainly a live wire and hyperactive, so regular long walks were a must.

Fate smiled kindly on Cammy, as soon after she had completed all her vaccinations, treatments, micro chipping and spaying, a kind English lady came to the SPCA Rehoming Centre in Victoria, fell in love with Cammy and made the big decision to take her to the UK. So the long seven months wait began, which is the length ot time it takes to arrange and have the rabies shot and her pet passport.

Puppy Cammy was now in fine fettle and bursting with good health, but she just did not grow, so she will be forever a puppy or else a new breed – a miniature Tal Cacca.

A bit of home socialisation was now on the agenda, so Cammy was fostered until her time for departure and having never been in a house in her life; the cooker, fridge, microwave, TV, etc were viewed with astonishment. However she took confidence from the other dogs in the house and decided that it was all okay.

The day came for her departure, but having already done one visit to the cargo section at the airport in her crate, she was totally unfazed by the whole journey, unlike her carer, who shed a few tears as she disappeared from view. She was treated with every care at Malta Airport and arrived at Heathrow in great spirits and all ready to face her new life.

The news is that she has settled into home life brilliantly and now has a new best friend – a proper full sized Tal Cacca called Harvey, who was another Gozo stray, taken to the UK several years ago, Her new human family have taken this lucky dog into their home and their hearts.Yesterday, Gozo SPCA volunteers attended a ‘Doggy Day’ at Piazza Tigné, Sliema. They said it was a very good day with dogs being welcomed inside the Point shopping mall as family members, which as they said, is a big step for companion animals in Malta.

There was a good attendance of owners and dogs and a good turnout from the animal NGOs. The Gozo SPCA volunteers were kept busy engraving dog ID discs and selling the popular Gozo SPCA dog bandanas.
