Update: The Divorce Movement has declared a victory in yesterday’s referendum after receiving around 52% of the total votes, it is thought that the figure may reach as high as 54%.
Early indications had shown Gozo with a No vote could be leading the way, but voting in many other districts went the other way and the majority voted Yes.
Gozo saw almost all of its 70% turnout vote No yesterday.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that the result was not what he wished for, but that the will of the people had to be respected, and therefore Parliament would now enact a law for the introduction of divorce.
