In 2010, approximately 15 per cent of new resident business units were registered in the Wholesale and Retail sector.

In 2010, the majority of resident business units, 76 per cent, were sole owners or partnerships, while most of the remaining units were registered companies.

In the year under review, 97 per cent of all enterprises were micro businesses (0-9 employed persons), thus upholding the predominance of this category in the Maltese economy.

The proportion of enterprises engaged in manufacturing vis-a-vis total enterprises went down to 5 per cent from about 6 per cent in 2002. Over this time span, the largest increase was registered by Professional, Scientific and Technical activities. Other advances were recorded in Arts, Entertainment and Recreation activities, Administrative and Support Services activities and Information and Communication activities.
