Labour MEP Edward Scicluna accompanied the Parliament President, Jerzy Buzek, on an Official Visit to Switzerland that took place on June 9th and 10th. It was the first official visit of the European Parliament to Switzerland.

On behalf of the EP’s Economic Committee Professor Scicluna held bi-lateral meetings with representatives of the Swiss Parliament’s Economic Committee including its President, Mr Hansruedi Wandfluh. Among the topics discussed were the Economic Governance Package and the financial sector regulation being passed by the Parliament.

Parallel meetings were held on Foreign Affairs, Internal Market, and Transport. Meanwhile, the two parliamentary presidents discussed the future progress of the European Parliament and its relations with Switzerland.

Following the event, Prof Scicluna said, “The EU and Switzerland are major trading partners so it is important that there is better co-operation between us, particularly when it comes to the performance of the Eurozone and financial services and regulation.”

“I am happy to have led the Parliament’s Economic Committee on this inaugural Official Visit. Switzerland is a big financial centre and we are both trying to make reforms to our financial services sector following the financial crisis which has affected us both. The two sides found the discussions very fruitful and look forward to positive developments in the near future.”
