Restoration work has got underway on the painting of San Lawrenz. This is being done as part of the church restoration project, which is being co-financed by the European Union.

Cali’s painting, which was in the centrepiece of the church, has been temporarily replaced by one that is said to have been the titular painting in the chapels dedicated to St Lawrence. This was before the area known as Ta’ Cangura, became a parish with the name of San Lawrenz.

Pierre Bugeja, director of PrevArti Co. Ltd, who has been entrusted with the restoration of the paintings, said that for him this titular is the most impressive of those being restored and that of the five paintings that he has worked on, this is the only one which to date, had no other intervention.

The restoration of the paintings commenced in September last year with the restoration and conservation of the four lateral paintings.
