The Ministry for Gozo and Nature Trust (Malta) have signed an agreement of cooperation on the Eco-School programme for the next three years. The event was attended by groups of school children from primary schools in Victoria.
The Ministry said that the purpose of this agreement is to strengthen the collaboration between the Ministry and Nature Trust (Malta) in the implementation of several environmentally friendly initiatives, as well as in environmental education and sustainable development for children attending primary and secondary schools in Gozo This will take place through the Eco-Schools programmes such as Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) and Learning about Forests (LEAF).
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, who chaired the agreement signing ceremony, said that the intention of the Ministry for Gozo is to draw on the programmes of environmental education and sustainable development for the purpose of offering instruction to students in Gozo. The Minister went on to say that this investment would not only benefit the children in the programmes, but also has the potential to affect other generations, spreading the advantages even wider. The Minister contiuned that with eco-Gozo the lives of the people of Gozo and all those who visit the island throughout the year will continue to improve. “Eco-Gozo is no longer just a vision, the island is moving in the right direction for Gozo to become an ecological island.”
By signing this agreement with Nature Trust (Malta), the Ministry for Gozo joined with other various partners, the Ministry for Rural Affairs and Environment, the Ministry of Education, Employment and the Family, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture, the HSBC Bank Malta Ltd and WasteServ Malta Ltd.
Also present for the ceremony were Mr Francis Sullivan, Adviser for the Environment within HSBC International, which also has an agreement with Nature Trust (Malta) and Mr Vincent Attard, Executive President of Nature Trust (Malta) and National Coordinator of the Foundation for Environmental Education, who signed on behalf of Nature Trust (Malta).
