MEPA has refused five separate applications for the sanctioning of or alterations to boathouses at Dwejra today, consideration on a further three applications has been postponed.
MEPA board chairman Austin Walker, said the Dwejra Action Plan, which was approved in November 2005, ruled that no boathouses which were not apparent from an aerial view taken in 1965, or from a survey carried out in 1967, would be approved. In addition, neither would any applications submitted after January the 31st 2006 be accepted.
In April of last year, MEPA refused a number of other applications for the sanctioning of or works to boathouses at Dwejra.
Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar has said that it welcomes the refusals of some of the requests for sanctioning of abusive building related to boathouses at Dwjera Gozo. It is regretted that decisions on three of the cases were postponed, which means that this sad episode in environmental management drags on.
The beauty of the Dwejra landscape with its unique geological and ecological features has already been impacted by the eyesore ‘visitor centre-cum restaurant’, with its platform and large beams dominating the view down into the once-wonderful geological bowl of Dwejra.
The sooner action is taken to remove the Dwejra illegalities, the better it will be both for Dwejra’s ecology and environment and also for the benefit of the Gozitan tourism industry, the NGO concluded.
It would be interesting to know how many of these ‘boathouses’ actually contain boats as opposed to kitchens, beds and flat screen televisions!
Well done MEPA for refusing to sanction some of the Dwejra boathouses. However it seems that again your board seems to be using different criteria for different people!
Mr. Tyrrell, you forgot to mention all the toilet and washing facilities that have been installed in the various boathouses as well!
Nobody has ever answered my questions about what happens to the sewage down there – I suppose nobody in their right minds would swim there anyway – but have all the cesspits been sanctioned as well, or have they simply been ignored?
The restaurant-cum-info centre is truly disgusting and is a real eyesore. I concede that it is better than the first attempt, but only marginally. To put it politely, a certain local mayor and his business partner should be tarred and feathered, or worse!
@mr tyrrell, i have been diving their for several years, not once have i seen anyone either putting in or taking a boat from one of these structures, its quite funny when i point out to my dive buddys, the building with balconys and no windows, boathouse !!!!!
