The restoration of the Church façade in San Lawrenz, is in its final phase and will be inaugurated officially on the 25th of July 2011. The Chorus Urbanus has been invited to participate in a celebratory concert for this event.
Two years ago the Church and the Local Council agreed to submit an application to the European Union to acquire funds for this much needed restoration. Months later it was announced that the Parish, together with the Local Council were granted the funds and works were undertaken after the necessary permits.
The concert to celebrate this event will feature works of a sacred nature and the popular hymn written by Joseph Formosa F’jum il-mewt tieghek Lorenzo. However, the concert’s highlights will be the much-awaited performance of some excerpts from the oratorio Laurentius composed by Dr John Galea and premiered way back in 2008. The oratorio was composed to a libretto by the late Msgr Nicholas J. Cauchi, then Bishop Emeritus of Gozo and had received great critical acclaim. Besides the choral excerpts under the direction of Dr John Galea, various soloists will take part. These include Yvonne Galea (soprano), Pamela Bezzina (m.soprano), Joseph Aquilina (tenor), Noel Galea (bass), Ruth Portelli (soprano), Mario Portelli (tenor). The concert will also feature works by Vivaldi, JS Bach, Mozart, Viadana and Lotti.
This inaugural concert will take place on the San Lawrenz church parvis against the backdrop of the church façade and will commence at 9.00pm.
