Ongoing restoration works are taking place on St Michael’s bastion at the Cittadella. The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono and Resources Minister Geroge Pullicino, visited the work that is being carried out.

Studies on the deterioration of the walls were carried out over two years by an Italian company as well as a number of experts both local and Italian who also made a contribution to the study. These resulted in the design of an anchorage system for any unstable pieces of rock

Work on the extensive restoration, which includes cleaning and replacment of stone as well as work by Enemalta on moving cables and brackets, started in January this year.

Restoration work is due to commence on the north facing bastions. Which will also include work on the foundations as well as the walls. The Cittadella rests on the type of rock which can be naturally prone to giving way from the central mass, which could endanger the stability of the bastions.

85% of the cost of the project is funded with the help of the European Union under the European Fund for Regional Development (2007-2013) – Investing in your future. The total investment of the project will be more than €3.3 million.

The restorations of the bastions on which the Cittadella is built is due to be completed by 2013.
