As part of the ‘Know Your Medicines’ campaign launched in January of this year, the Medicines Authority published another leaflet which contains information on Reference, Generic and Falsified Medicines. The campaign aims to enhance the safe and rational use of medicines through the dissemination of information on the choice and use of medicines for health care professionals and patients alike.

The leaflet will be distributed to all households in Malta and Gozo. The leaflet will be in both Maltese and English Language and is available on www.knowyourmedicines.gov.mt. The Medicines Authority takes the opportunity to thank all the stakeholders who collaborated and gave their feedback in the drafting of the leaflet.

Know Your Medicines initiatives include the publication of another information leaflet entitled ‘Things you need to know about your medicines’ which was distributed through pharmacies, clinics and local councils, a launch of a Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/medicinesmalta), a dedicated page for consumers and patients and the publication of the Malta Medicines List.

Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to visit and use the Malta Medicines List available on www.maltamedicineslist.com which provides information on products authorised to be placed on the market in Malta. The website includes information on WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification System, the active ingredient, the name and form of the product, whether the medicine is subject to medical prescription (prescription only medicine) or not subject to medical prescription (over the counter), contact details to obtain more information about the medicine, and access to a number of Package Leaflets and the Summary of Product Characteristics.
