This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the National Poet, Dun Karm Psaila (1871 – 1961).
As part of the events being held this year to mark this anniversary a lecture will be held this coming Tuesday, the 25th of October.
The lecture, which starts at 8: 00pm, will be held inside the Church of Ascension, St. Julian’s (just down from the Libyan school, above the parish church). The lecture will deal with the idea of the sea in the writings of Dun Karm, with references to the poem ‘Otia Aestiva,’ part of which mentions St. Julian’s, where the poet spent some of his summers. Dun Karm Psaila was sometimes known as ‘The Poet of the Sea.’
The keynote speaker is Professor Charles Briffa BA (Hons.), P.G.C.E., Dip.Arabic, Ph.D., Lecturer at the University of Malta. Professor Briffa specialises in the fields of literary criticism and translation. He has published several books and is the editor of the Kullana Kulturali.
There will also be songs by students of the G.F. Abela Junior College (UM), under the direction of Mro Manoel Pirotta DNESM (Lyon) [MA] Dip CNR (Lyon) [BA (Hons.)] Hon VCM LFIBA CT, FVCM (Hons.) FTCL FLCM FNCM LMusLCM LTCL. As well as teaching full-time, Mro Pirotta, is Musical Director of the Junior College Orchestra.
The lecture is being organised by the Parish of St. Julians, Akkademja tal-Malti, and Versatili, with the financial support of the Ministry of Education, Employment and the Family.
Entrance to the lecture is free, patrons who wish to attend are kindly asked to be seated before 8.00pm. Following the lecture there will be light refreshments served.
