As the country reels from so many recent acts of animal cruelty, a group of friends have decided to do something to spread the message on why kindness to animals should be a foremost priority.

Thus, scrumptious, home-made treats will be the stars of the upcoming ‘Eat a Cupcake, Save a Stray’ event, as the team behind it heads to The Point to sell their tasty wares.

Organised by friends who share one thing in common – a love for animals, the event hopes to raise desperately-needed funds for the Abandoned Animals Association (AAA).

“It was an idea that came to us a few months back,” explains Jo Caruana, who, along with nine others, will be baking through the night tonight. “We all love baking and all wanted to do our bit for charity, so we came up with a plan to combine the two and hope to raise a few thousand euro for the 135 dogs currently housed at the Hamrun sanctuary.”

So, thanks to their generous sponsors, the girls hope to bake well over 1,000 cupcakes between 8pm and 8am (11-12 November), and to sell them later that morning at The Point, which is well-known for regularly supporting animals charities.

And while donations are already flooding in, the team are asking the general public to continue to support them in two ways. “The first part of our challenge will be to stay awake and get these cakes made!” continues Ms Caruana. “For that reason, we’re asking people to donate whatever they can to the cause; even the smallest amount will make a huge difference.

“Alternatively, people can join us on 12 November at The Point to make a donation in return for a cupcake. We promise it will be a tasty way to make a much-needed difference, and to get tails wagging happily at this very hard-working sanctuary.”

Donations can be made to the Eat a Cupcake, Save a Stray Bake-Athon in two ways:

though online banking (Acc/No MT HBMT 042 161794 050, HSBC BANK MALTA PLC, ZABBAR BRANCH) citing ‘Cupcakes’ as the subject for the transactions;

or by sending a cheque to Eat a Cupcake, Save a Stray, AAA, PO Box 24, Hamrun (cheques payable to AAA). The AAA is Charity Number VO/0092.

Those involved would like to thank: Whiskas, Pedigree, Hilton Malta, The Point, the AAA and NET TV’s Animal Diaries for their valuable support.
