Government insists Arriva must provide essential serviceFollowing the GWU instructions to its Arriva members to go on strike from 8pm tomorrow evening, the Transport Ministry has said this afternoon that it has instructed Transport Malta to ensure that services were not reduced by more than 50% by Arriva during the strike action.

The Ministry called on those involved to find an immediate solution to avoid unnecessary inconvenience to all public transport users. The statement also said that the Ministry would not get involved in the disagreement and that it was a private matter between employer and employees.

The Ministry also reminded the GWU that public transport was categorised as an essential service under industrial relations law, therefore Arriva would be legally entitled to discpline any employees who will not obey legitimate orders to provide the essential service during the industrial action.
