Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said announced today at the launch of the rehabilitation project of Mtarfa’s playing field, that as from the beginning of the new year, smoking in playing fields will be banned.
The Parlialmentary Sectretary commented that despite the fact that playing fields are in the open, there are also children and families in the small area and this therefore makes it an unsuitable place to smoke. The decision, he said, had been taken by the cabinet, with the legal notice to follow shortly.
Two playgrounds in Gozo that had been closed due to safety reasons are Victoria and Qbajjar Promenade. The playground in Victoria is due for upgrade, with a planning application lodged with MEPA.
Good news, as everybody has the right to breathe clean air, free from the poisons in tobacco smoke.
If you can smell tobacco smoke, then the poisons are going into your lungs and your family’s lungs.
Also, we need to de-normalise smoking in childre’s eyes – there is nothing normal about smoking.
In regard to “enforcing” smokefree places, we usually try to approach people before they light up, and say “I don’t know if you realise that this is now a smokefree area – for the health and comfort of others, would you please move away whilst smoking.”
