Zammit Clapp Hospital will start to serve as a Nursing Home for the elderly. This hospital will be accomodating 112 residents and the refurbishment, which is currently taking place, will cost €1.7 million. This was stated by Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care, Mario Galea during an activity for the eldery during Milied Melliehi 2011.

Parliamentary Secretary Galea also spoke about the success of the night shelters and as an example he mentioned the case of Mellieha night shelter. This service helps the elderly to remain in the community. The night shelter was opened in Mellieha following the success of the launch of a night shelter pilot project at Jesus of Nazreth Institute at Zejtun in November last year.

In the meantime discussions are being held with the Church authorities and local councils to open more night shelters. The Parliamentary Secretary announced that a new night shelter will be opened at St. Vincent de Paul Residence in Luqa.

He also reminded those present that Mellieha is also benefetting from a day centre for the elderly. After the Mellieha Day Centre was opened in June 2010, the Parliamentariat Secretariat held various discussions with a number of Local Councils to open more day centres. There are currently 18 day centres in which 1500 elderly attend regularly.

For next year, the government has allocated €118,000 to open two new Day Centres: one at Kirkop and the other at Siggiewi.
