The first event of the Health and Well- Being Campaign was recently organised by the Student Health Committee.
The Health and Well-Being Campaign is a 3 month-long campaign currently organised by the Student Health Committee, which is a health oriented liaison of several student organisations, namely, ‘Kunsill Studenti Universitarji’ (KSU), Malta Medical Students’ Association (MMSA), Malta Pharmaceutical Students’ Organisation (MPSA), Malta Health Students’ Association (MHSA), Malta University Sports Club (MUSC), Youth for the Environment (Y4TE), Greenhouse and Students for Healthy Living (SFHL).
The project aims to
1. Improve drug awareness in Malta (including tobacco), and the risks related to drug abuse.
2. Promote dialogue and exchanges of best practice through the media. Such risks relate to various aspects of health, and this project aims to embrace not only direct effects such as those on the cardiovascular and nervous system, but also indirect effects especially those relating to reproductive health.
3. Instill a sense of interest in the topic, not only directly through outreach with the general public but also by propagating the message through the local media.
The first event of this campaign was held on Saturday, the 17th December, at the Paceville Square in St. Julians. Glow sticks were handed out to passers-by who gave up at least one of their cigarettes, and everyone had the opportunity to take a photo with a picture given by the committee team. Two examples of these pictures were that of a healthy lung and that of a severely diseased lung after several years of smoking tobacco. All the photos were then posted on the Health and Well-Being Campaign Facebook page and the person in the photo with the greatest number of likes was given a six month gym membership kindly offered by the MUSC. The campaign will also include future seminars and campaigns.
